After watching the movie “Call me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss”, I understood the feminists who complain that this profession is overglamorized in the media (although they complain for the wrong reasons). A good part of the film focuses on the ladies who are shopping until they drop, meet gentlemen from upscale neighbourhoods, travel in luxury cars, fly around the world in private jets and wait for calls in a private swimming pool. Very little is shown about the workings of this industry: how to prepare for an appointment, what qualities are needed to become successful, how to stay safe and avoid unpleasant situations.
The adult industry has received a lot of attention lately, and while I can only be happy that we are not automatically portrayed with extreme contempt or glamor anymore, it is distressing to think that the increasing presence of sex industry-related items in the mainstream media could cause many impressionable young people to assume that escorting is a carefree and comfortable life. What will happen to them when they realize that being an accomplished escort is a lot more demanding than what they originally thought? There is much more to this job than “what happens between consenting adults”. How will they end up, unprepared? Even though I myself have greatly benefited from entering companionship, there are others who get out of it emotionally scarred for life. The decision to enter this line of work should not be made quickly.
I will not deny that good amounts of money can be made very fast in this field. However, there is a world of difference between fast and easy. I would compare it to a concert: the public is hearing a masterpiece in which the notes flow like a river, but they will never hear the hours of practice it took to make it sound like one. A long time ago, a lady named Jet Set Lara wrote a short article here that quickly explains that working in “elite” circles requires a lot of work. For the few ladies who work at her level, there are many more who meet questionable people in seedy motel rooms. If you want to make this line of work safe, sane and comfortable, you must work very hard at it. Establishing and maintaining your reputation is great work.
Remember, most movies are made for entertainment purposes, and the stories they tell most often do not portray accurately the way things happen in real life. When watching a movie, we are almost certain that there will be a happy ending, so the bad twists of the story appear much less unpleasant. Life isn’t always like that, unfortunately.
